Case Study: Camp Twitch and Shout

How Camp Twitch and Shout Uses Spark Hire for Screening Camp Counselors

About Camp Twitch and Shout

Camp Twitch & Shout is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children with Tourette's Syndrome through engaging and supportive camp programs.

Goals for Video Interviewing

Camp Twitch and Shout’s leadership team includes volunteers from all over the country (and in Australia.) They wanted to find a solution that increased team collaboration, by allowing every team member to have an input, to ensure they only chose the best staff members.

Q&A with Executive Director, Tricia Kardon

Q:

What are some of the results you’ve seen with Spark Hire?

A:

Our goals are being accomplished!

We have a team of wonderful volunteers that now have the ability to look at the video interviews at their own convenience. This is extremely important to us because we strive to not burden our volunteers with too much craziness! This has resulted in our volunteers having the ability to offer their input on each candidate, which in turn has helped promote discussion amongst the team.

They all LOVE it!

Q:

How does video interviewing fit into your hiring process?

A:

Spark Hire has made our process much less stressful. We have to interview a lot of people (100 at a time) very quickly. Before we decided to start using video interviews, it simply took us too long to screen all of our candidates.

The most important feature was having the ability to separate the applicants by "jobs." Doing this has allowed us to look at returning volunteers, leadership applicants, and new applicants separately. Being able to sort everybody into a job has truly helped us streamline our process and stay organized.

Q:

How do you get your team members to buy into video interviewing?

A:

It didn't take a lot of convincing - they were on board from the beginning!

The convenience was the key. They all have full time jobs, so the ability to look at the video interviews when they had time was really helpful.

Q:

What is the biggest impact that video interviewing has on your hiring process?

A:

Being able to see our candidates’ personalities, and how they respond to our questions, has made the biggest impact. The team really values having the ability to review the videos over and over again.

Also, because our team does a lot of remote work, we really lean on having the ability to make comments or recommendations on candidates so everybody knows to go back in and review specific answers to specific questions.

We have also decided to use video interviewing to help us place our volunteers into groups with people that have complementary personalities to each other.

Q:

What is your favorite aspect of video interviewing?

A:

I personally love the mobile app. I know it has also been very popular with the rest of the team because it is just so convenient.

Also, being able to tailor the jobs and questions to meet our needs has helped us to really get to know our candidates better. You can only learn so much about a person from words on a sheet of paper. Because we run a youth camp, we take our screening process very seriously and only want to bring in the best counselors.

Q:

What are some things you love about Spark Hire?

A:

The support and the convenience.

We will continue to use Spark Hire for years to come! We are a very small volunteer organization with a small budget, so the affordable pricing is a huge win for us.
